A microwave cleaning tip from the folks over at America's Test Kitchen (by the same folks who bring you Cook's Illustrated) in their latest news letter:

When we saw Easy-Off Microwave Wipes in the supermarket, we were intrigued. A moistened wipe is sealed in a plastic package, and the package is heated briefly in the microwave, which causes it to burst and issue forth cleansing steam. Three minutes later, the microwave can be opened and wiped down, using the supplied wipe.

We tested the Easy-Off wipes against our own Quick Tip for cleaning a microwave: heating a bowl of water in it on high for 10 minutes. We found the wipes to be ineffective, removing only a small amount of surface grease. We had much better luck with the bowl of steaming water, which loosened the food particles sufficiently to let us simply wipe out the microwave with a damp towel.

Of course it figures that I did just buy those wipes a week or two ago... Ah well.
